Objective evaluation of subjektive driving impressions

ford_skidpadNewly developed vehicles are tested by attempt drivers under both standard conditions and thresholds and are evaluated afterwards. The evaluation travels take place either with off-the-shelf vehicles or with prototypes during the development process. On the one hand the test driver acts as a controller in the closed loop maneuver, on the other hand as a sensor for the subjective evaluation. He gives physical inputs to the controlled system and receives physical reactions, which affect the inputs again. By an analysis of the transfer functions between input and output sizes the attempt driver forms an opinion about controlled system and the necessary controlling efforts.

For the evaluation of the driving dynamics with a "handling monitor" the physical input and reaction sizes of the controlled system are measured and the transfer functions are determined. On the other hand expectations of the attempt driver to the transfer function of the controlled system "vehicle" are analyzed. The deviations between the expectation of the driver and the measured transient characteristic lead to the impairment of the subjective judgement.
After the analysis of an attempt driver and the statement of its expectations judgement can afterwards also be determined from virtual trial trips.

Thus it is reached that the virtual product developing process in the future is accompanied continuously by the subjective judgement of an attempt driver and the virtual development process needn't to be interrupted with building up complex prototypes.
